What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a disease that is caused by bacteria that infect dogs as well as cattle, horses, hogs and other domesticated animals and humans.

The urine of infected animals contains the bacteria in large quantities, which becomes the source of infection. Dogs that are infected by the bacteria orally or through skin wounds develop inflammation of the kidneys and liver. Vomiting and diarrhea then rapidly cause dehydration and the urine become dark brown in color. The same symptoms occur in the case of domesticated animals and humans and, when serious, can even cause death. Prompt treatment in early stage with highly effective antibiotics, however, will bring about recovery.

However, if the disease is not completely cured, the bacteria will continue to be discharged in the urine for a long time and, when a dog becomes infected, care must be taken to assure that the disease will not be passed on to the pet owner or to other animals. The disease can be prevented by a vaccination and, therefore, you should make sure that your pet dog receives this vaccination.
