G7 International Forum for Empowering Women and Youth in the Agriculture and Food Systems

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) held "G7 International Forum for Empowering Women and Youth in the Agriculture and Food Systems" on Monday, December 12. Mr. Ken Saito, the State Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, attended the forum to make opening remarks. Mrs. Akie Abe, the Spouse of the Prime Minister of Japan, attended the forum as the commentator for the panel discussion of female farm managements from inside and outside the country.

3. Overview

(1) Workshop for Policy Experts
Keynote speeches by the participants from OECD and FAO were followed by the presentations of G7 members for sharing information about the situation of women and youth in agriculture as well as the policies and systems for empowering them. After the presentations, the participants discussed on the issues in planning policies for empowering women and youth.
Also, the participants agreed that the presentation materials used in the workshop should be shared on the internet so that the content of the event can be utilized for policy planning in many countries including G7 members and developing countries.

(2) Panel Discussion
Mr. Ken Saito and Mrs. Akie Abe made opening remarks, and Mrs. Abe stayed at the event to join in the panel discussion as the commentator.
Female farm managements from Japan, France, and the United States presented how they came to work as farmers, situations in farm management, roles of women in management, and their visions for the future. After the presentations, they actively discussed about the importance of empowering women in agriculture and how the strength of women can contribute to farm management.
Also, there was exhibitions of tractor, mower and other products developed in the Nougyou-joshi Project (women empowerment project promoted by MAFF) as well as the activities of 4H Club in Japan, which were introduced to the participants before the panel discussion.
