The survey data have been compiled based on the responses from 125 (approx. 40 percent) out
of the 342 Japan-based companies establishing overseas subsidiaries in the food business of
the East Asia region.
Due care is therefore needed when using the information given here does not cover all
conditions of the overseas subsidiaries operating in the East Asian food market.
Note: The 336 Japan-based companies mentioned above are based on the hearing from the industry
segments.
[Summary of Results]
1. Sales in food sector
In 2006, sales by the subsidiaries active in the East Asia food market amounted to 1202.2 billion yen.
(1) Sales shares by business category indicates that food product production was the highest share
(52% of total sales), followed by the wholesaler trade (21%), the beverage production (18%), and the
retail sector (8%).
(2) Sales shares by country indicates that China was the highest share (43%), followed by Taiwan (16%),
and South Korea (15%).

2. Sales shares by delivery destination
Sales shares by delivery destination indicates that the local selling (overseas) was the highest
percentage (76%), followed by the selling in third countries (9%). Thus, the sales outside of Japan
accounted for 85% of total.
