Livestock Statistics (as of Feb. 1, 2008) (Revised)
The number of beef cattle has increased for the third consecutive year.

  1. The numbers of dairy cattle and feeding households
    The number of feeding households was 24,400, a decrease of 1,000 (3.9%) from the previous year due to business closure caused by farmers aging and soaring feed prices.
    Dairy cattle numbered 1,533,000 heads, a decrease of 59,000 (3.7%) from the previous year due to the decreasing number of feeding households.
    The number of dairy cattle has been declining since 2003.
     
  2. The numbers of beef cattle and feeding households
    The number of feeding households was 80,400, a decrease of 1,900 (2.3%) from the previous year due to business closure caused by farmers aging and soaring feed prices.
    Beef cattle numbered 2,890,000 heads, an increase of 84,000 (3.0%) over the previous year due to a promotion of stepped-up measures to increase the number of beef cattle.
    The number of beef cattle has increased for the third consecutive year.

  3. The numbers of hogs and feeding households
    The number of feeding households was 7,230, a decrease of 320 (4.2%) from the previous year due to business closure caused by farmers aging and soaring feed prices.
    Hogs numbered 9,745,000 heads, a decrease of 14,000 (0.1%) from the previous year due to the decreasing number of feeding households.
     
  4. The numbers of layers and feeding households
    The number of feeding households was 3,300, a decrease of 160 (4.6%) from the previous year due to business closure caused by farmers aging and soaring feed prices. Layer chickens numbered 181,664,000, a decrease of 1,580,000 (0.9%) from the previous year due to the decreasing number of feeding households.
