Overview of the 2007 Food Balance Sheet

1 Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio

- The FY 2007 ratio stands at 40% on a calorie basis, an increase of 1 point, and 66% on a production value basis, a decrease of 2 points from the previous year.

2 Consumption and Production

(1) On a calorie basis

- Daily per capita total supplied calories was 2,551 kcal, an increase of 1 kcal (0.03%) compared to the previous year.
- Dairy per capita calories from domestic supply was 1,016 kcal, an increase of 13kcal (1.3%) compared to the previous year.

(2) On a production value basis

- Supply for domestic consumption on a production value basis was 15,094.1 billion yen, an increase of 8.1 billion yen (0.5%) from the previous year.
- Domestic production on a production value basis was 10,003.8 billion yen, a decrease of 260.1 billion yen (2.5%) from the previous year.

3 Influence on Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio for Main Products

(1) On a calorie basis

1) Main products that led to an increase of food self-sufficiency ratio

- Wheat: The planted area decreased by 4 %, however, the production was 910 thousand tons, the highest in the past ten years due to the fine weather in major producing area such as Hokkaido and Kyusyu. (Yield: + 13 %) This resulted in an increase of calories from domestic supply.
- Rice: The yearly per capita consumption increased by 0.4 kg, from 61.0kg to 61.4kg, compared to the previous year. Since Japan is basically high self-sufficient in rice, the proportion of rice calories in total supply increased.
- Sugars: The production of sugar beet and sugar cane, and the harvested area of sugar cane have increased due to the fine weather, and the production of domestic sugar increased by 3.5%.
- Potatoes: Spring-planted potatoes benefited from comparatively favorable weather, and potato production increased by 9.2% compared to that under bad crop conditions in the previous year.
- Tangerines: The production increased by 27% compared to the previous year, the off year, because 2007 was an on year for tangerines.

2) Main factors that led to a reduction of food self-sufficiency ratio

- Fats: Domestic production of fish oil decreased by 13% because of declining fish catches of species as raw materials for the oil and decreasing demand.
- Milk and Dairy Products: Domestic production decreased by 0.8% due to a summer heat wave, while imports of cheese increased by 1.6%.
- Sweet potatoes: The production decreased by 2.1% compared to the previous year due to an influence of typhoon, hot weather and low rainfall in Kagoshima, a major producing prefecture in Japan.

(2) On a production value basis

1) Main products that led to a reduction of food self-sufficiency ratio

- Vegetables: The domestic production increased mainly in fruiting vegetables such as onions, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants and others. The domestic production value, however, decreased due to vegetable prices falling caused by the decline in demand.
- Rice: The domestic production value decreased due to the price declined from the previous year.
- Livestock: The increased domestic production of beef and hen eggs boosted the supplies, and this caused the prices to fall. Moreover, the compound feed price rose due to an effect of rising international price of corn, and imported feed value increased. Consequently the domestic production value decreased.
(Note) Domestic production of livestock on a production value basis excludes imported feed value.

2) Main factors that led to an increase of food self-sufficiency ratio

- Potatoes: The production of sweet potatoes decreased due to an influence of typhoon, hot weather and low rainfall. However, the domestic price rose substantially and the domestic production value increased.
- Fruits: An increase of tangerine production did not lead to a decline in the price. And a domestic production value of apples increased because of a rise in the price caused by its high quality.

4 The PFC Balance

Because of an increase in consumption of rice, and a decrease in consumption of fish, seafood and fats, the proportion of carbohydrate increased by 0.4 points, and those of protein and fats decreased by 0.1 points and 0.3 points, respectively. This resulted in improved PFC balance compared to the previous year.
