Survey Overview
The Census of fisheries is the key statistics executed to reveal fishery production and employment structures in Japan as well as the actual conditions surrounding fishing village and fishery such as the fish distribution and processing. This is the survey which offers necessary basic materials to promote the fishery administration in Japan.
Since the first survey was conducted in 1949, it has been conducted every five years. The Census of Fisheries 2008 is the 12th census.

Point of the survey results

● The number of marine fishery management body is about 115,000.
The number of marine fishery management body as of November 1, 2008 is 115,194 and shows a 13% reduction from the level of 5 years ago.

● The number of persons engaged in fishery is about 222,000.
The number of persons engaged in fishery as of November 1, 2008 is 221,896 and shows a 6.9% reduction from the level of 5 years ago.

1  Marine fishery survey

(1) The number of fishery management bodies The number of fishery management bodies as of November 1, 2008 is 115,194 which has decreased by 17,223(13%) from the last survey.

(2) Number of persons engaged in fishery

The number of persons engaged in fishery
is 221,896 which has decreased by
16,475 (6.9%) compared to the last
survey.

(3) The number of fishing vessel

The number of fishing vesselwhich were used in the past year and held as of thedate of survey by fisherymanagement bodies is 185,461 whichhas decreased by 28,347 (13.3%) compared to the last year.

2  Survey of inland water fisheries

The number of lake fishery management body nationwide is 2,850 which has decreased by 274(8.8%) compared to the last survey.
The number of inland water aquaculture management bodies is 3,764 which has decreased by 731 (16.3%) compared to last survey

3  Survey of distribution and processing

(1) The number of freezing and refrigerating factories
The number of freezing and refrigerating factories nationwide which deal with fishery products is 5,870 which has increased by 113 (2%) compared to the previous survey.

(2) The number of fishery processing factories
The number of fishery processing factories nationwide is 10,097 which has decreased by 1,368 (11.9%) compared to the previous survey.
