Summary of technical meeting between Japan-US regarding US-Beef

  

 

We would like to inform that a technical meeting on US-Beef between Japan and the US was held in San Francisco, the United States from Sep. 14, (Tuesday) to Sep. 15 (Wednesday) 2010.

At the meeting, they exchanged their opinions regarding the measures against BSE issues, and agreed to continue discussions.

 

Summary of the meeting

   The United States explained about the BSE control measures since August 2007 (last technical meeting), including compliance with the enhanced feed ban, situation of surveillance and the ban of slaughtering cattle that become non-ambulatory disabled following ante-mortem inspection. Both sides exchanged views on the subjects subsequently.

The contents of explanation from the US

(a) Regarding the enhanced feed ban which was introduced in 2009, the US explained its content and the monitoring of its compliance.

(b) Regarding the surveillance, the US explained the situation of surveillance after August 2007.

(c) Regarding the measures against BSE at slaughterhouse, the US explained that slaughtering cattle that become non-ambulatory disabled following ante-mortem inspection was banned in 2009.

(d) Japan requested more information/more detailed data.

 

 Japan explained the current Japan’s BSE control measures such as compliance against the Japanese feed ban and surveillance. Both sides exchanged views on the subjects subsequently.

 

The contents of explanation from Japan

(a) Regarding the feed ban, Japan explained the situation of dedicated lines at feed mills for ruminant animals and monitoring for the compliance against feed ban including on-site inspection.

(b) Regarding surveillance, Japan explained that there has been no BSE occurrence in Japan since Feb. 2009.

(c) Regarding BSE control measures at the slaughterhouse, Japan explained about the current prohibition of pithing practice (since April 2009) and the BSE testing situation that the local governments are voluntarily conducting the blanket testing even after the Japanese government set over 20 months of age animals as a target for BSE testing.

 Both government of the US and Japan agreed to continue discussions.
