The World Census of Agriculture and Forestry in 2010 has been implementing the guideline, “Program of the World Census of Agriculture and Forestry in 2010” which is advocated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, for the purpose of providing the basic materials which is necessary for planning, proposal and promotion of its administration, clarifying the structure of production or employment in Japanese agriculture and forestry and the realities in the rural areas. In Japan, the Census of Agriculture and Forestry has carried out every five years since 1950, and it becomes the 13th time in 2010.
(a) As of February 1, 2010, there are 1,727,000 agricultural and forestry management entities, with a decline of 17.2% compared with the previous survey in 2005 (same as follows). Among them, there are 1,679,000 management entities in agriculture only, and 140,000 management entities in forestry only with decline of 16.4% and 30.1% respectively.
(b) The number of the farm households is 2,529,000, a decrease in 320,000(11.2%). Among them, there are 1,632,000 commercial farm households, a decrease in 332,000(16.9%).
(c) The population of farming engaged in commercial farm households is 2,606,000, a decrease of 746,000 (22.3%). And their average age is 65.8 years old.
(d) In view of the number of agricultural management entities in their respective scales of cultivated land under management, the increasing rate seems high in the scale of 30 ha or more in Hokkaido and 5 ha or more in other prefectures.
(e) The area of cultivated land under management per one agricultural management entity expanded 2.2 ha from its previous scale of 1.9 ha.
(f) In view of the agricultural management entities in their types of organization, the number of agricultural management which converted into corporation form is 22,000, an increase of 17.0%.
(g) In view of the status of agricultural production related business that the agricultural management entities deal with, there are 34,000 in business of processing agricultural products, an increase of 42.9%.
Also, the numbers of farmers' managements operating leisure-related business are 9,000 in sightseeing farms, 6,000 in farms for lease, as well as farms for experience of farming, and they increase in 15.7% and 45.2% respectively.
(h) The abandoned cultivated land area has become 396,000 ha, an increase in 2.7%, however, the increase range shrunk in the five years.
(i) The forestry area is 24,850,000 ha, and in view of national and private areas, the national area is 7,220,000 ha (the ratio of the forestry area is 29.1%), and the private area is 17,630,000 ha (70.9% same as above).
The rate of forestry (ratio of forestry area in the total of land area) is 66.6%, and there is no major change compared with the previous survey in 5 years ago.
