Nihon Bishoku Shukan” (Japanese Gourmet Weeks) to take place in Singapore

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) will hold “Japanese Gourmet Weeks” in Singapore, from Thursday, October 3rd through Saturday, November 30th, 2013.

1.Aim of Gourmet Weeks

To expand Japan’s agriculture, fishery, and forestry, it is crucial to introduce Japanese foods and culinary culture to the world’s food market, which is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

As part of the efforts to spread Japan’s gastronomic culture, MAFF is organizing “Nihon Shoku Bunka Shukan” (Japanese Gastronomic Culture Weeks). As an integral part of these “Gastronomic Culture Weeks,” the Ministry will hold “Japanese Gourmet Weeks” in Singapore. The “Gourmet Weeks” feature many different events to promote Japan’s foods and cuisine culture among the people of Singapore, which are intended to stimulate their interest in and appreciation of Japan’s gastronomic art.

2.Dates and venues of Gourmet Weeks

(1) Opening ceremony

Date: Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Venue: Island SuiteETakumi (Marina at Keppel Bay)

Activities: The MAFF will hold a reception luncheon featuring Japanese foods, to introduce “Japanese Gourmet Weeks” to participants from the food and distribution businesses, and press people.

(2) Restaurant week

Date: Friday, October 4th through Saturday, November 30th, 2013

Venues: Some 20 restaurants in the city of Singapore

Activities: Many Japanese restaurants in the city will join in a “stamp rally,” an event for customers to press stamps on a notebook, etc. Also, they will present information on Japan’s agricultural and fishery products, as well as on its foods, to general consumers.

(3) MAFF’s booth at “Oishii Japan”

Date: Thursday, October 17th through Saturday, October 19th, 2013

Venue: Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center

Activities: In the venue of “Oishii Japan 2013,” MAFF will run an exhibition booth to introduce Japan’s foods and gastronomy to visitors from the food and distribution industries and the press, as well as to the general public. The booth also features a stage, where demonstrations will be held in three categories – “fresh,” “umami (tastiness),” and “sake.”

  ・“Fresh” – Owner-chef Shiraishi of “Takumi,” a Japanese restaurant, will give a demonstration.

  ・“Umami (tastiness)” – Chef Maetomo of “Chikuyotei,” will give a demonstration.

  ・“Sake” – Mrs. Ayuchi Momose, a “sake samurai” active in Hong Kong, introduces the audience to many sake brands from all over Japan.

(4) Gourmet events at apparel boutiques

Date: Friday, November 1st, 2013

Venue: JRunway, within Plaza Singapura

Activities: This is a “collaborative event” between fashion and culinary art, aimed at general consumers. Some fashion magazine reader-models of Singapore will talk about Japan’s foods and gastronomic culture. Also, some made-in-Japan sweets will be introduced.

(5) Japanese Gourmet Festival

Dates: Saturday, 2nd Nov., Sunday, 3rd Nov., Saturday, 9th Nov., Sunday, 10th Nov., Saturday, 16th Nov., Sunday, 17th Nov., Saturday, 23rd Nov., Sunday, 24th Nov., 2013

Venue: Liang Court

Activities: Every weekend, a cooking demonstration under a different subject will be given, aimed at general consumers, to introduce them to Japan’s agricultural and fishery products, as well as other foods.
