2013 Census of Fisheries

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan is conducting a nationwide “2013 Census of Fisheries,” which will be dated November 1st, 2013. (This is to be followed by a Distribution and Processing Survey, dated January 1st, 2014.) 
The Census of Fisheries, the biggest survey of Japan’s fisheries, has been conducted every five years since 1949. This coming one is the 13th. 

1. Overview of the Survey

(1) Survey Date

The Survey covers situations and facts as of November 1st, 2013. (Distribution and Processing Survey to follow covers January 1st, 2014).

(2) Objectives of the Survey

To obtain a comprehensive view of Japan’s fisheries, as well as its fishing communities, distribution and processing of fishing products, etc., to provide basic data needed in planning, making, and promoting fishery policies in accordance with the Basic Plan for Fisheries. Such policies can include, among others, measures to help fishers and  fishing industry, restoring and managing fishery resources, and comprehensive measures to develop fishing communities and fishing ports.

(3) Survey Targets

All fishery-related parties of Japan, including but not limited to fishery households, fishery companies, fishery cooperatives, markets of fishery products, cold storage and refrigerating facilities and business bodies of the fishery processing industry.

(4) Survey Method

 Survey takers from the national and prefectural governments will visit the related parties covered in this Survey.

(5) Survey Items

The number of members in each fishery household, number of fishery workers, sales and shipments of aquatic products, diversification of fishery management , number and tonnage of fishing vessels used, marine aquaculture situations, sales of processed fishery products, and other items.

2. Publication of Survey results

The Survey results are to be published as approximate data by the end of August 2014.(only in Japanese)
