MAFF UPDATE No.757(Published on November 1st, 2013)

A notice on a recommendation by a Subsidiary Body concerning the inscription of “Washoku; Traditional Dietary Cultures of the Japanese” on the “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (Representative List)”

This is a notice that a report made by a Subsidiary Body (Note 2) of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of IntangibleCultural Heritage (Note 1) has published on UNESCO’s website. According to the report, “Washoku; Traditional Dietary Cultures of the Japanese ” nominated by Japan is recommended to inscribe on the Representative List.

In response to this recommendation, the eighth session of the Intergovernmental Committee, scheduled to convene in Baku (Republic of Azerbaijan) this coming December, should make the final decision as to whether or not to inscribe the element on the “Representative List”.

This notice has been issued simultaneously by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Agency for Cultural Affairs as well.

1. The recommendation by the Subsidiary Body

The Subsidiary Body evaluated Japan’s nomination, “Washoku; Traditional Dietary Cultures of the Japanese”, and recommended to the Committee to inscribe the element because it satisfied the criteria for the inscription.* Of all the 31 nominations from all over the whole world, 23 were recommended to “inscribe,” one chosen for “refer,” and the remaining seven “not to inscribe.”

2. Future schedule

The eighth session of the Intergovernmental Committee, scheduled to convene in Baku (Republic of Azerbaijan) Monday, December 2nd through Saturday, December 7th, 2013, will make the final decision as to whether or not to inscribe Japan’s nominated element on the “Representative List.”

 

(Note 1) “The Intergovernmental Committee”: 24 countries are chosen out of the State Parties of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of IntangibleCultural Heritage (155 countries, as of October 2013), and meet once every year. They examine nominated files based on the Body’s recommendation and, decide wheter or not to inscribe them on the “Representative List.”

(Note 2) “Subsidiary Body”: Six countries chosen out of the 24 members of the Intergovernmental Committee form this Body. The Body evaluate nomination files submitted by the State Parties and recommend to the Committee.
