Inaugural Symposium of INWEPF

The inaugural symposium of the International Network on Water and Ecosystem in Paddy Fields was held at Tokyo on 1-2 November 2004. Following the recommendations adopted at the Ministerial Meeting on Water for Food and Agriculture on the occasion of the third World Water Forum in 2003, INWEPF is established to realize three challenges endorsed at the Ministerial Meeting, namely , Food security and poverty alleviatio, Sustainable water use and Partnership.

INWEPF is established to provide an open platform for promoting dialogue, exchanging information and experiences, creating synergy among existing forums, strengthening capacity building, developing good practices and formulating ideas for innovative policy and management options in the field of sustainable paddy water use, conservation of environment and better governance.

For the inaugural symposium, over 200 participants from 17 countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Viet Nam) and 10 international institutions (ADB, Asian Productivity Organization, FAO, ICID, INPIM, IRRI, IWMI, MRC, World Bank, PAWEES) actively participated in the discussions.

The symposium consisted of presentations and discussions for two major topics:

1) Multiple roles and values of agricultural water in paddy fields
2) Participatory irrigation management

The first steering meeting of INWEPF

The first steering meeting of INWEPF was held following the inaugural symposium on 1 November 2004 in Tokyo.

In the first steering meeting, the Terms of Reference of INWEPF as well as the Strategic Action Plan of INWEPF 2004-2006 were adopted by participating member countries.

For the second steering meeting, the Korean delegation expressed their willingness to host the meeting in 2005 and endorsed by all participating members.

The FAO-Netherlands conference "Water for Food and Ecosystems"

FAO Netherlands to organize the International Conference on Water for Food and Environment from 31 January to 5 February 2005. The objective of the conference is to identify and discuss the concrete progress being made in the implementation of sustainable water management for food and ecosystem.
