The 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit

  • 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 16-20 May 2013.
  • APWS is an international conference which is hosted by Asia-Pacific Water Forum (chairperson: Mr. Yoshiro Mori, former Prime Minister of Japan).
  • The representatives of countries and international organizations in Asia-Pacific region discussed several water related problems with broader perspectives in this summit.
  • Main theme: “Water Security and Water-related Disaster Challenges: Leadership and Commitment”

  There were 4 events;

    1. Leaders Forum : participation of ministerial levels from 50 Asia-Pacific countries and areas
    2. Focus Area Sessions: comprised by seven sub-themes
    3. Technical Workshops: technical workshops on seven sub-themes
    4. Exhibitions and Open Events: presentation of exhibitions and posters

Japan participated in Technical Workshop and introduced INWEPF activities in the area of “Economic, Food and Water Security” co-chaired by FAO UNESCAP.

Leaders Forum

  At the Leaders Forum, Chiang Mai Declaration was endorsed which includes follows;

5. Promote efficient use of water resources while taking into account basic human needs including domestic, industrial and agriculture water uses and balancing preservation of ecosystems,”

6. Improve irrigation systems in agricultural sector which consume a huge volume of water resources as a part of the plans to promote water use efficiency,

Technical Exhibition

Furthermore, Japan introduced “INWEPF activities” and “Multi-functionality of paddy farming” by poster presentation in cooperation with RID (Royal Irrigation Department of Thailand) over an entire period of Technical Exhibition.
