Enhancing Effective Participation in Codex Activities: developing science-based national positions and contributing scientific data to the Codex standard-setting activities

The training workshop on Enhancing Effective Participation in Codex activities was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAORAP), as part of the FAO regional project "Support for Capacity Building for International Food Safety Standard Development and Implementation in ASEAN Countries (GCP/RAS/295/JPN)."
The objectives of the training workshop were to help:
-Recognize key factors for the establishment of Codex standards;
-Understand the structure and functions of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the importance of Codex standards and other recommendations in the international trade of foods and feeds, risk analysis in Codex, and the development of discussion papers and the national positions;
-Learn how to generate scientific data for developing Codex food safety standards and other recommendations; and
-Prepare delegations for participating effectively in Codex committee meetings.
The workshop was attended by eighteen participants from nine ASEAN countries, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as participants from the MAFF and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan.
Through the three-day intensive workshop, the participants were given lectures, and actively participating in case studies, a MOCK session and group sessions.
The results of the pre-questionnaire and the post-questionnaire showed significant improvement in the knowledge and understanding of the participants on the subject matters. Further, 84% of the participants evaluated that the workshop was excellent.
