Characteristics

Miwa sōmen production begun during the Nara era (about 1,300 years ago). Miwa area is said to be the birthplace of Sōmen. Characterized by strong “koshi” (close to “al dente”), Miwa Sōmen provides excellent elasticity that enables noodles to be extremely thin and prevents the noodles from becoming too soggy after being boiled.

Link with the local area

Every year on February 5th, the “Bokujo Ritual” is held in Omiwa Shinto Shrine in Miwa area and sōmen producers across the country participate in this Shinto ritual. Accepted widely as household industry since the mid‐1960s, production of Miwa Sōmen expanded throughout Nara prefecture.
