On July 31, the Statistics and Information Department of MAFF released a report on rice growing conditions as of July 15. Overall growing conditions were normal or slightly better than normal, as plants were normal in height or slightly taller than normal and the number of stalks was normal or greater than normal, owing to generally good weather, with some regional exceptions, after the middle of May.
In Kochi, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, the heading date of early seasonal rice occurred slightly earlier than normal, and the number of panicles was normal or slightly greater than normal. Although early growth was retarded by low temperatures from the end of March to the beginning of April, the weather was generally good after that. Accordingly, growing conditions are estimated to be normal or slightly better than normal.
Information on rice growing conditions as of July 15 describes the growing condition of rice in the early stages of a long cultivation process. It is thus difficult to make an accurate forecast of this year's harvest based on this information as the growing condition may improve or deteriorate considerably depending on the weather. The next report on the growing condition of rice, as of August 15, will be released in late August.

On July 31, the Statistics and Information Department of MAFF released a report on the statistics concerning supply and demand for logs in 2000. The total supply of and demand for logs (where supply is assumed to equal demand) in 2000 was 37,498,000 cubic meters, a decrease of 3.5% from 1999. Compared with 1999, demand decreased for domestically produced sawlogs by 3.4%, for plywood by 2.2% and for wood chips by 1.6% due to an increase in imports. Supply of domestic logs was 17,987,000 cubic meters, a fall of 4.0%, while supply of imported logs was 19,511,000 cubic meters, a decrease of 3.1%. The causes of these changes were reduced restrictions in producer countries and the increase in imports of lumber products. In addition, domestic logs accounted for 48.0% of total log supply, a decrease of 0.2% from 1999.

In "Information: Application of Higher Gate Price (GP) Levels on Pork," in MAFF Update No. 420 the statistics should have been expressed in yen/kg with arrows connecting them. The second arrow in the "Reference" section should have begun a few spaces after the 2nd quarter mark. In the Statistics box, it should have read "Planning and Coordination Office of the Statistics and Information Department," rather than "Planning and Coordination Office of the Statistics and Information Division."
