Yamagawa Port is a natural harbor formed by seawater flowing into a volcanic crater. It serves as a refuge for ships during stormy weather and developed as a base for bonito fishing in the waters near Amami during the Meiji and Taisho periods due to its favorable location.Fishermen from Kochi, Ehime, and other regions moved there in search of high-quality raw materials for producing premium katsuobushi, and helped expand the production of katsuobushi in Ibusuki by sharing their techniques with the local population. The region continues to preserve the traditional method of Honkare Honbushi, a type of katsuobushi first developed in Japan, passed down through generations.
