Link with the Production Area

The ancestor of Aizu Jidori chicken is said to have been brought to Aizu by the defeated Heike clan long ago. Its beautiful tail feathers have been used in the local traditional performing art of Aizu Higan Shishi for over 450 years, and its meat is highly prized for celebrations and other special occasions. In 1987, when the breed was on the brink of extinction, Fukushima Prefecture took measures to protect it. Through selective breeding and crossbreeding with superior meat breeds, the current Aizu Jidori was developed in 1991. In 1999, it was also designated as a local breed under the JAS standards for jidori chicken meat.
