Characteristics

Shiriuchi Nira Kitanohana (garlic chives) have deep green leaves that are broad, thick, and tender. They are highly valued by end-users for their texture, for retaining strong aroma and flavor even after cooking, and for their noticeable sweetness. Garlic chives with good shelf life are shipped almost year-round. They receive strong demand from market professionals, trading at prices higher than the average unit price for garlic chives in the Tokyo Wholesale Market, with shipment volumes increasing annually.

Link with the Production Area

Taking advantage of soil with good aeration and drainage, along with a climate that is cool in the summer and relatively mild for Hokkaido in the winter, cultivation of garlic chives began in 1971. They established methods for growing high-quality garlic chives by selecting varieties suited to the region, implementing rigorous field management and repeated training in cultivation techniques. They also achieved stable shipments by adjusting shipping timing through joint greenhouse covering for temperature control.
