Characteristics

Produced to be sold fresh, Monobe Yuzu is characterized by its blemish-free, attractive exterior and long shelf life. On average, only about 18% of the country's yuzu fruits are produced for fresh consumption because of the added labor intensiveness of growing them for this purpose. In contrast, roughly 69% (2017) of Monobe Yuzu fruits are typically destined for the greengrocers, which is a marked characteristic. Monobe Yuzu is rated highly by the market for its stable availability over long periods of the year, rigorous implementation of fruit selection and sorting, and long shelf life, receiving many orders specifically requesting yuzu from Monobe.

Link with the Production Area

The local area is the country's largest producer of fresh yuzu. Blessed by average annual temperatures of around 15°C, high precipitation, and good drainage, many of the local orchards are ideal for yuzu fruit growth. More than 90% of the fruits are shipped after they have ripened to a uniquely vivid yellow peel color caused by sharp temperature drops that occur in October.
