Japan and the Republic of Palau hold the third meeting of the Task Force for Promotion of Agricultural Cooperation (January 17, 2024)

“Both Japan and the Republic of Palau have been further advancing agricultural cooperation,
both publicly and privately.”

The third meeting of “Task Force for Promotion of Agricultural Cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Palau” was held on January 17 in Tokyo with participants from both the public and private sectors to discuss ways of enhancing future cooperation by taking into consideration the current status of agricultural cooperation.

Overview

In May, 2021, Japan and the Republic of Palau established the “Task Force for Promotion of Agricultural Cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Palau” under “the Memorandum of Cooperation in the Agricultural Sector between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment of the Republic of Palau.” The meeting under the task force aims to deepen discussions on future agricultural corporations based on shared progress and achievements. Mr. Steven Victor,
the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment for the Republic of Palau, visited Japan and participated in the third meeting in person.

After Mr. ORIKASA, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Palau, and Mr. Steven Victor, made their opening remarks at the beginning of the meeting, there were information-sharing briefings from both sides about accumulated efforts for fruit fly management, human resources development on live stock, and the like.
Based on these briefings, participants exchanged ideas and made recommendations for potential agricultural cooperation and agreed to hold a regular meeting under the task force for the purpose of continuing the discussion to further advance agricultural cooperation in both Japan and the Republic of Palau.

In addition to the meeting, Minister Steven Victor made a dialogue with Mr. Suzuki, State Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan. At this dialogue, both countries reaffirmed that they will continue to work closely in this matter to further drive agricultural cooperation.
