PRIMAFF Symposium on EU Efforts to Build a Sustainable Food System and Implications for Japan : Toward the Expansion of Organic Agriculture

With the growing impact of climate change, there is an urgent need to build a sustainable food system. In October 2020, the Prime Minister declared Japan will become carbon neutral by 2050 and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also aims to achieve both productivity improvement and sustainability of the food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry through innovation by 2050. To achieve this goal, we formulated the Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems, "MeaDRI" in May 2021 and are strengthening our efforts based on this strategy. In particular, organic farming greatly enhances the natural circulation function of agriculture and reduces the environmental burden, so expansion of organic farming is expected.

PRIMAFF conducted a study on the outlook for Japan's organic food market based on trends in the global organic food market in the contract research from 2018 to 2021. In addition, in the research project from 2019, organic and sustainable farming in major countries has been investigated.

This symposium focuses on the expansion of organic farming and EU, which is taking the lead in ensuring sustainability. In addition to the presentation of research results, there will be a presentation by a strategy formulator in charge of developing organic farming strategy in Germany. Additionally, through dialogue with the participants, we will have implications for Japan to consider ways to accelerate sustainable agriculture.
