PRIMAFF Symposium on “Environmentally Friendly Agricultural Policy and Realization of Sustainable Agriculture: Toward the Diffusion of Organic and Biodiversity-friendly Agriculture“

In response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and growing environmental concerns around the world, there is a need to reduce the environmental burden of agriculture and engage in sustainable agricultural activities that meet the SDGs, such as Goal 3: Good health and wellbeing and Goal 15: Life on land. Human resources are also needed to promote such activities.

In recent years, Japan has seen an increase in the number of people wishing to move to rural areas, as well as urban residents interested in working in agriculture and forestry. New farmers tend to seek out organic agriculture, biodiversity-friendly agriculture, and agricultural products with less environmental burden, and they may adopt unconventional agricultural products and marketing formats.

In light of the above, PRIMAFF has been conducting “Research on Sustainable and Diverse Agriculture in Japan” since FY2023. As part of this research project, PRIMAFF is conducting research to promote environmentally friendly agriculture, including organic and biodiversity-friendly agriculture.

In this symposium, a researcher from Europe, a leading continent in environmentally friendly agriculture, Japanese researchers, and an administrative official in charge of agri-environmental policies at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will be invited to introduce policies and local efforts to realize sustainable agriculture, and to present their impact on rural areas and agricultural management. In addition, through dialogue with the participants, we will have implications for considering ways to achieve sustainable development in Japan's agriculture and rural areas.
