Week for Sustainability ”Let’s shop the future”

Project “SCAFFF2030”: The Sustainability Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Foods will launch a campaign ‘Sustainability week (Sustaina-Week)’ to promote ‘a daily choice for a green future’ from September 17th to 27th in parallel with the scheduled United Nations 75th General Assembly.

Sustaina-Week showcases the sustainable efforts of companies participating in the SCAFFF2030 and some stores will offer products focusing on enhancing sustainability. You will find tips on what actions to take and what to buy for "small steps" towards sustainable consumption.

Life is made up of choices. During the 11 days of Sustaina-Week, you can find "small steps" towards consumption for sustainability and tips on what to buy.various_value.jpg


Events during Sustaina-Week 2020  -September 17th to 27th-

1) “Eat It, Use It and Know It! Our Sustainability Actions”: We will promote products and services with a SCAFFF logo that focus on stopping climate change, promoting circular economy and local resilience, biodiversity, water and soil sustainability.

2) “Sustainability Here and There”: SCAFFF2030 members will hold events under the theme of "Sustainability" at various locations in Japan (For this year, events will be held only in some areas).

3) “Sustainability Around Me”: During September 22 and 23, when the high-level debate at the United Nations General Assembly begins, we will showcase the sustainability initiatives of SCAFFF members by SNSs with hashtags such as #SustainabilityWeek #SustainabilityAction.Following talks with SCAFFF2030 members, we will announce further information in early August, with more details to follow in mid-August.

Focusing on "eating" as an everyday activity, we work with companies in a variety of food-related fields such as food and cooking equipment to produce educational content for consumers, support acquisition of international certification, and plan and produce online and offline events to know and think about sustainable food . As a first step, we plan to implement a program to learn about the SDGs through "cooking" and connect it to action.  COOP's forestation efforts
COOP conducts an initiative to protect and nurture the ocean through tree planting. For every product sold, one yen is reserved in a fund to promote forestation, from which we promote natural cycle of forests and utilize marine resources. The fund is used to pay for seedlings and management costs.

Serving menus using sustainable seafood in the employee cafeterias
Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance has been serving menus using MSC and ASC-certified sustainable seafood in the employee cafeterias of the Surugadai Building and the new Surugadai building of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance since October 2019.
The menu will be available in Chiba from August 2020, and in Osaka by the end of fiscal 2020.

Meiji Agroforestry Chocolate
Through the production of agroforestry chocolates, Meiji is contributing to the reforestation and biodiversity conservation in the Amazon by supporting agroforestry farming (forest-growing agriculture) in Brazil.
Supporting Refugees through Meiji Milk Chocolate
Meiji donates a portion of sales from Meiji Milk Chocolate, sold between January and February each year, to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Association's program to improve nutrition for refugee children in Africa.

Reducing Meiji Group's Use of Plastic Packaging
Meiji Group will strengthen its efforts to recycle plastic resources in order to solve the social problem of ocean pollution caused by plastic waste. We will reduce the amount of plastic used in yogurt and other container packaging, aiming to reduce it by 25% or more (compared to fiscal 2017) by fiscal 2030. We will also increase the use of biomass and recycled plastics.
Expansion of the Meiji Group's use of environmentally friendly paper
Meiji Group will expand the use of environmentally friendly paper, such as the use of certified and recycled paper, in the containers and packaging of various products, as well as in various printed materials and copy paper, aiming to use 100% of environmentally friendly paper materials by fiscal 2020. 
Labeling to reduce food waste
Starting in February 2020, the Meiji Group will progressively implement the labeling "best-before month" instead of "best-before date" for food products with a shelf life of one year or more to reduce unnecessary waste.
This will contribute to the reduction of food waste throughout the supply chain, as well as improve the efficiency of logistics.

The "Kobento", a smaller-sized bento (packed meal) boxed lunch that uses plastic-free (plastic-reduced) containers (Sep 9(Wed)-22(Tue))
From March 2020, the company began developing mainly miniature bento boxes made from falcata wood, an alternative to petroleum-based plastic containers. The mini-sized bento boxes are popular with women and children, who are unable to finish them because of the large amount of food in conventional bento sizes, as they are of department store quality and can finish them with no worries.Falcata, an eco-friendly wood container, grows five times faster and is more productive than warp wood. It contributes to the marine plastic problem and forest conservation.

(1) Vegetables: Original rice bran used for pickling that was once used in the company cafeteria for MI Food Style are sold and continued by the store when the head office moved. The outer edges of the sponge pancakes, which are usually not sold as trimmings but instead discarded or closed for sale, are sold in this project as a freshly baked "kama-dashi" to convey the value of the freshness of the sponge pancakes, which also helps to reduce waste. Nichirei Foods supports the food bank activities of the NPO Second Harvest Japan, and donates products that do not have a problem with quality but cannot be sold in the general market, such as products whose outer packaging was deformed when imported. In cooperation with the Nichirei Logistics Group, we deliver the products directly to orphanages and other facilities certified by Second Harvest Japan using low-temperature transport.

Environmental consideration supported by food distribution network (External Link)
The Nichirei Logistics Group utilizes the largest food distribution network in Japan to contribute to the reduction of environmental impact.
One example of this is our joint delivery system. By combining multiple companies that used to make individual deliveries with one another, we are able to reduce environmental impact and reduce the amount of time and effort required by our suppliers by improving the efficiency of deliveries through the stacking of goods.

Linking Food and Veganism to the Environment and Sustainability
As the global environment is changing, including global warming, daily eating is a major factor in sustainable SDGs efforts.
Associate Professor Inoue, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Sophia University, will explain the relationship between veganism and the serious climate crisis, as a dietary option that is friendly to the body, mind and future generations.

Internal promotion seminar for the SDGs in 6 steps (September 23rd)
We will explain the basics of the SDGs, especially the reason why the social issues of 2030 are relevant to corporate performance.
In addition, we will also train participants in the five major themes that all companies working on the SDGs must address or face, and how to solve them. In particular, we will provide up-and-coming information at this stage about the question "how far do we need to go to ensure that we are addressing the SDGs?". In summary, JMA's SDG process model will be used to train participants in the "6 Steps" and its implementation tips.

Grapes cared by farmers and ponies
Snow-white farm grow grapes without using any pesticides (except gibberellin) and chemical fertilizers, which are friendly to the environment and people.
The ponies and their son play an active role in preparing the soil with horse manure, mowing the inside of the grape house, and preventing damage from monkeys and civets.
