Week for Sustainability 2020 ”Let’s shop the future”
Small steps come together to make a big impact to enhance sustainability
Project “SCAFFF2030”: The Sustainability Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Foods will launch a campaign ‘Sustainability week (Sustaina-Week)’ to promote ‘a daily choice for a green future’ from September 17th to 27th in parallel with the scheduled United Nations 75th General Assembly.Sustaina-Week showcases the sustainable efforts of companies participating in the SCAFFF2030 and some stores will offer products focusing on enhancing sustainability. You will find tips on what actions to take and what to buy for "small steps" towards sustainable consumption.
Life is made up of choices. During the 11 days of Sustaina-Week, you can find "small steps" towards consumption for sustainability and tips on what to buy.

Events during Sustaina-Week 2020 -September 17th to 27th-
1) “Eat It, Use It and Know It! Our Sustainability Actions”: We will promote products and services with a SCAFFF logo that focus on stopping climate change, promoting circular economy and local resilience, biodiversity, water and soil sustainability.
2) “Sustainability Here and There”: SCAFFF2030 members will hold events under the theme of "Sustainability" at various locations in Japan (For this year, events will be held only in some areas).
3) “Sustainability Around Me”: During September 22 and 23, when the high-level debate at the United Nations General Assembly begins, we will showcase the sustainability initiatives of SCAFFF members by SNSs with hashtags such as #SustainabilityWeek #SustainabilityAction.Following talks with SCAFFF2030 members, we will announce further information in early August, with more details to follow in mid-August.

Focusing on "eating" as an everyday activity, we work with companies in a variety of food-related fields such as food and cooking equipment to produce educational content for consumers, support acquisition of international certification, and plan and produce online and offline events to know and think about sustainable food . Meiji Group will strengthen its efforts to recycle plastic resources in order to solve the social problem of ocean pollution caused by plastic waste. We will reduce the amount of plastic used in yogurt and other container packaging, aiming to reduce it by 25% or more (compared to fiscal 2017) by fiscal 2030. We will also increase the use of biomass and recycled plastics.

Meiji Group will expand the use of environmentally friendly paper, such as the use of certified and recycled paper, in the containers and packaging of various products, as well as in various printed materials and copy paper, aiming to use 100% of environmentally friendly paper materials by fiscal 2020.

Starting in February 2020, the Meiji Group will progressively implement the labeling "best-before month" instead of "best-before date" for food products with a shelf life of one year or more to reduce unnecessary waste.

From March 2020, the company began developing mainly miniature bento boxes made from falcata wood, an alternative to petroleum-based plastic containers. The mini-sized bento boxes are popular with women and children, who are unable to finish them because of the large amount of food in conventional bento sizes, as they are of department store quality and can finish them with no worries.Falcata, an eco-friendly wood container, grows five times faster and is more productive than warp wood. It contributes to the marine plastic problem and forest conservation.

Project “SCAFFF2030”: The Sustainability Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Foods will launch a campaign ‘Week for Sustainability (Sustaina-Week)’ to promote ‘a daily choice for a green future’ from September 18th to 28th in parallel with the scheduled United Nations 76th General Assembly, and the UN Food System Summt on 23rd September.
Sustaina-Week showcases the efforts of companies participating in the SCAFFF2030 and some stores will offer products focusing on enhancing sustainability. You will find tips on what actions to take and what to buy for "small steps" towards sustainable consumption.

2. Methods for 'Week for sustainability'

In the clothing and daily-life products section, we sell a lineup of products made from organic cotton. In the past, we have mainly sold underwear and towels, but this season Seven & i will promote T-shirts made from TRUECOTTON, a yarn made from organic cotton grown in Turkey, which is one of the rarest and best quality.
The T-shirts made by 100% organic cotton yarn that is traceable to its producer and place of origin.
The staffs will try it on and experience the product for themselves beforehand, and directly convey the advantages of the product to customers in the shops.

In 2010, Nippon Paper Industries signed an agreement with the Wild Bird Society of Japan to dedicate protected logging-free areas in company-owned forests in Hokkaido. In 2015, this collaboration led to the establishment of new standards for the company’s forests that balance the conservation of habitat for Blakiston's fish owls with forest operations, including consideration of the scale and timing of forest operations. In 2020, artificial nest boxes were installed to support the breeding of Blakiston's fish owls. The Company received the Hokkaido Biodiversity Conservation Practice Award (2020) in recognition of its collaboration.

Since about 50% of the tea leaves imported by Japan come from Sri Lanka, and about 25% of them are used in “Kirin’s Afternoon Tea”. Kirin has been supporting tea farms in Sri Lanka to obtain Rainforest Alliance certification since 2013. 30% percent of the certified farms obtained the certification with Kirin's support.
In August, Kirin launched the “Kirin Afternoon Tea Straight Tea(250ml paper pack (LL Slim))”, the first product in the series with the Rainforest Alliance certification mark, which indicates that it is made from at least 90% certified tea leaves from Sri Lanka.

“Mercian” is working with the international NGO Earthwatch Japan to increase the number of Clara leaves, the only food plant for the larvae of the oriental whitefly, in its own vineyard under the guidance of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization(NARO). The vineyard, called Mariko-Vineyard is a hedgegrow-type field converted from abandoned land, where native and rare species are nurtured thirough herbaceous cultivation. Clara cuttings are grown and planted in the field the following spring. This year, the local elementary schools will also participate in the activity.

●Eradicating Invasive Plant Species from Iriomote Island
Nippon Paper Industries concluded an agreement for forest conservation activities on Iriomote Island in cooperation with "the Iriomote Island Eco-Tourism Association” and the Okinawa Regional Forest Office of the Forestry Agency's Kyushu Regional Forest Office.
