Plastic resource circulation in the food industry
In recent years, while plastic resource recycling has become problematic in Japan and overseas, in industries of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and food, given the abundant use of plastic products extremely familiar to consumers, such as food containers and packaging, there is a need to respond proactively. Under such circumstances and given that various legal systems concerning reduce, reuse and recycling (3R) have already been introduced in Japan, including containers and food packaging, etc., a positive recycling rate exceeding 80% has been realized for PET bottles, reflecting the fact that a waste disposal system is in operation. In addition, in each industry and company, unique efforts are being made to control emissions and collect and reuse material, in line with respective business conditions and circumstances.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries focuses on the voluntary efforts of each company/industry group, from the perspective of further publicizing and actively encouraging. Our first step has to be urging an immediate response to this issue on the part of the food industry and companies utilizing plastic products such as containers and packaging in various ways as well as organizing a coordinated response involving cross-sectional movements of the government and industries.
