MAFF has established the “Guidelines for Certification of Cooking Skills for Japanese Cuisine in Foreign Countries ” in April 2016.

The guidelines shall be established so that private bodies, etc. can voluntarily certify foreign chefs of Japanese cuisine whose knowledge and cooking skills regarding Japanese cuisine have reached a certain level so that they may train chefs who wish to prepare Japanese cuisine with the appropriate knowledge and skills. Chefs must also effectively communicate the appeals of Japanese food, dietary culture, and Japanese agricultural and marine products in foreign countries.

As of March 31, 2025, a total of 3433 persons have been certified, with 25 for Gold, 1202 for Silver, and 2206 for Bronze.

The Application/Management Body

An organization that has submitted a notification to the the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as an application/management body specified in the Guidelines for certification of cooking skills for Japanese cuisine in foreign
countries (hereinafter referred to as the “Guidelines”)
is an application/management body specified in the Guidelines.

Currently, application/management bodies are engaged in the operation and management of the Guidelines, the dissemination of the Guidelines, and the certification of certification bodies based on the Guidelines.

Please contact the following application/management bodies for details of activities such as the certification of cooking skills for japanese cuisine in foreign countries and the status of the progress.

Logo Mark for certification of Japanese cooking skills overseas

This logo mark may be used by an application/management body and a certification body based in the guidelines for the purpose of use on certification of cooking skills for Japanese cuisine based on the guidelines.

License application of Logo Marks

The Application/Management Body and the Certification Body that use the logo must submit an application for authorization of use of logo to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in accordance with the following "Guideline for Licensing of Logo Marks for The Certification of Cooking Skills for Japanese Cuisine in Foreign Countries"

Upon receipt of the application, a license certificate will be issued if it is deemed to conform to these license guidelines.
