To prevent the entry of domestic animal infectious diseases into Japan ~Border quarantine~

Currently, there have been outbreaks of virulent domestic animal infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza in various countries around the world.

If a virulent domestic animal infectious disease enters Japan, it will not only cause serious damage to the country's livestock industry, but will also have a huge impact on the socioeconomic activities.

If you come to Japan from countries where there have been outbreaks of virulent infectious diseases, please avoid visiting livestock/live poultry related facilities and avoid coming into contact with domestic animals.

Border a preventative measure at airports/seaports

At Animal Quarantine Service, in order to safeguard against the entry of domestic animal infectious diseases, we are running the following border quarantine measures at airports/seaports.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Shoe sole disinfection

We are carrying out disinfection of the soles of shoes at all airports/seaports where passenger services arrive from overseas.

Implementation status of shoe sole disinfection at airports/seaports.

Mats for disinfection of shoes are laid down in areas where all passengers pass through, such as the area before the immigration inspection or the boarding bridge.

Disinfection mats are soaked in a disinfectant. Please tread firmly on them.

*Disinfection mats are slippery, so please be careful.

To persons who have visited a livestock related facility before coming to Japan

For persons who have visited a livestock related facility or live poultry market and come into contact with domestic animals, there is a risk that pathogens of a domestic animal infectious disease are adhered to them or their clothing, so after arriving in Japan, please come to Animal Quarantine counter in the baggage claim area.

To persons who have brought shoes with soil on them from overseas

Please remove any soil from sports shoes (golf shoes, etc.) and trekking shoes, etc., beforehand.

Moreover, if you have brought these shoes with you from overseas in a bag, when you arrive in Japan, please come to Animal Quarantine counter in the baggage claim area.

Bringing animal products into Japan

There is a risk that virulent domestic animal infectious disease can enter Japan via animal products such as meat products.

Occasionally avian influenza virus is detected in poultry meat, which will not be imported into Japan, as a result of our inspection.

Before coming to Japan, please check information regarding the bringing animal products into Japan.

Furthermore, before you take animal products overseas from Japan, the items need to undergo export quarantine inspection by Animal Quarantine Service.

Quarantine detector dog

Quarantine detector dogs have been introduced who can distinguish the smell of and find meat products, etc. subject to animal quarantine inside luggage.

Questioning when entering Japan

Animal Quarantine officers will question persons entering Japan as to whether or not they have brought with them clothing or shoes, etc., that they were wearing, or equipment that they used, when they visited a livestock related facility such as farms.

Questions are asked via announcement inside planes and ships arriving in ports directly from countries and regions where there have been outbreaks of diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, or via announcement inside passenger terminals.

In addition, for certain flights and ships, persons entering Japan may be handed an animal quarantine questionnaire, or be questioned verbally..

Public Relations campaign

In order to make animal quarantine system and the activities of Animal Quarantine Service more widely known, we launch public relations campaigns at each airport/seaport during periods when there is an increase in the movement of people and goods, such as during long holidays.
