It has been confirmed overseas that humans have been infected with Ebola hemorrhagic fever and Marburg viral disease by monkeys that do not exist in Japan and the importation of monkeys from certain regions has been prohibited in order to prevent outbreaks of these infectious diseases in Japan.
Meanwhile, there are also countries where these two diseases have not occurred or where monkeys or humans who become infected with these diseases can be appropriately controlled by physicians or veterinarians and it is possible to import monkeys into Japan from some of those countries ("approved exporting countries").

The "approved exporting countries" is the following:*

*
United States of America
People's Republic of China
Republic of Indonesia
Republic of the Philippines
Socialist Republic of  Viet Nam
Co-operative Republic of Guyana
Republic of Suriname

Please note that importation of monkeys from the area other than above mentioned is Strictly prohibited.

Before bringing a monkey to Japan from any of the approved exporting countries, a detention inspection period of 30 days or longer under the surveillance of a government agency in the exporting country is required and, upon arrival in Japan, it is also necessary to present a certificate issued by a government agency in the exporting country containing a statement to the effect that the monkey in question has undergone such detention. In addition, after arrival in Japan, the monkey will have to receive an additional detention inspection for a minimum of 30 days in order to assure that it is not infected by the Ebola or Marburg virus.
Detention inspection is an examination that maintains monkeys in isolation from other animals or humans and is normally conducted at a detention facility at an Animal Quarantine Station.
Importation will not be permitted without this certificate issued by a government agency in the exporting country.

Furthermore, it is also necessary to be aware of the fact that monkeys can only be imported at two locations, the Narita International Airport and the Kansai International Airport. Moreover, 40-70 days prior to arrival in Japan, you will need to notify the Animal Quarantine Station Yokohama Head Office of the anticipated date of importation and the number of monkeys involved. It may also be necessary for you to change the location or date of the importation depending on the condition at the time of notifications (i.e., the availability of detention facilities) received by the Animal Quarantine Station.

For details, inquire at the nearest office of the Animal Quarantine Station.
