What procedures are required to takeout animal products from Japan?

The following animal products(*) must be inspected by the Animal Quarantine Service prior to export under the Domestic Animal Infectious Disease Control Law.This requirement applies to any export irrespective of the use or quantity: it should be noted that export of such products for present, personal consumption or commercial sample, no matter how small the quantity is, needs to be inspected.

*Animal products means;

1. body, meat, meat products, fat, blood, skin, hide, pelt, fur, hair, feathers, down, bone, horns, antlers, hooves, egg and goods processed from any of the above, etc. of derived from cattle, pig, goat, sheep, horse, dog, rabbit, chicken, duck, turkey, queer, goose and honey-bee

2. Animal products other than the above mentioned animal products which the government authority of the destination country requires an Animal Health Certificate assuring not likely to disseminate animal diseases

 

In addition, exporters have responsibility to confirm the requirements with the government authority in the destination country.

First of all, exporters should inquire to the Embassy in Japan（外部リンク） or refer to the website of the destination country regarding the latest requirement.

If the destination country has any requirements, the exporter should inquire to the Animal Quarantine Service regarding the procedure for export inspection in advance.

Questions about taking meat products, etc., out of Japan

 

ATTENTION

In Japan the foot and mouth disease broke out in April 2010.

Therefore the Animal Quarantine Service is suspending to issue the Animal Health Certificates for some animal products derived from artiodactyls.
