What procedures are required to takeout animal products from Japan?

An inspection is required.

The following animal products(*) and any other animal products for which the destination country requires an animal health certificate should be inspected by the Animal Quarantine Service prior to the export and an Animal Health certificate should be issued as stipulated by the Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control Law. This requirement applies to any export irrespective of the use or quantity: it should be noted that export of such products for souvenir, personal consumption or commercial sample, no matter how small the quantity is, needs to be inspected.

*:body, meat, meat products, fat, blood, skin, hide, pelt, fur, hair, feathers, down, bone, horns, antlers, hooves, egg and goods processed from any of the above, etc. of cattle, pig, goat, sheep, horse, dog, rabbit, chicken, duck, turkey, queer, goose and honey-bee.

You can receive the inspection at the Animal Quarantine Service.

It is exporter's responsibility to find out what is required by the destination country when he/she import an animal product, in addition to an animal health certificate issued by the Japanese government assuring that the product is not likely to disseminate animal diseases. Please inquire at the Embassy and/or check the website of the destination country(外部リンク) and find out the latest requirements.

Importation of beef and some other products from Japan is prohibited in some countries due to the Bovine Spongeform Encephalopathy outbreaks in Japan. For details, please inquire at the Embassy(外部リンク) of the destination country.
